Cortland's Garage was established in 2007 however, in the 1960's, Cortland's Garage was called Al's Tavern. Al and his family lived in the same building that held the bar. So when you're near the DJ booth, consider how that used to be a room that somebody slept in! Crazy huh?
In 1962, a man named James E. Lenon was issued IR No. 1. He was a famed tavern robber. In 1971, the Chicago Police caught on and set up a sting to catch him. This is some real life mobster stuff. The plan was to go down at Al's Tavern. He did manage to rob Al's however, upon escape, he and two accomplices were shot down by the police. "Their bodies were riddled with bullets," the Chicago Daily News reported at the time. After at least 30 tavern hold-ups, Public Enemy #1 was finally stopped, at the bar we now call Cortland's Garage.
That story alone is reason enough for you to head to Cortland's Garage. The history is absolutely undeniable.
